How Many Megapixels Do I Need?

It seems intuitive enough. More megapixels is better, right?

But, as with most things electronic, the magic number just seems to keep on growing… 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 18, 21?!? How many megapixels do you really need?

One way to think about this question is to estimate how many pixels (and therefore the number of megapixels) it takes to effectively render a few different common output formats.

Facebook. Let’s say you want to share a picture over the Internet. If you’re on Facebook, the largest possible image size is 720 pixel x 720 pixels. That’s 921,600 pixels… or a whopping 0.9 megapixels.

Other Web Sharing. Let’s say you just want to share some pictures over the web and look at them on your computer. While the upper limit on the resolution will vary, it will be limited by the size/resolution of your monitor. My 19? flat panel and video card on my desktop support a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. That’s a total of 1,296,000 pixels, or 1.3 megapixels. Hmm… now we’re getting closer to modern times.

Basic 4×6 Print. Ok, let’s up the ante and contemplate a print product. Typical print resolution is 300 ppi (pixels per inch). That means that a 4 inch by 6 inch picture will require approximatley 1200 pixels by 1800 pixels. That’s 2,160,000 pixels, or a shade over 2 megapixels.

Large 8×10 Print. Want something bigger? How about a nice 8×10 print that can fit in a matted 11×14 frame. At 300 ppi, that requires 2400 x 3000 pixels. That’s 7.2 megapixels. Now we’ve actually entered the realm of modern cameras. But, still, most consumer level digital point and shoot cameras deliver at least 7 or 8 megapixels.

Uber-Large Poster Print (24 x 30 inches). And now for something obscene. Let’s make a really big poster print. At Costco, I can print an image at 24×30 inches for $8.99. That would require 7200 x 9000 pixels or 64,800,000 pixels. So, a full 300 ppi image would take, umm, 65 megapixels. Oops. They actually look pretty good at ~12-15 megapixels as long as you don’t hold your nose an inch from the picture.

In other words, pretty much every conceivable normal output format (from web images to an 8×10 print) requires less than 8 megapixels. If you’re a professional photographer creating movie posters, large print ads, or the like, you could probably benefit from a higher resolution. And there are some reasons why you’d like to have a little extra resolution to spare. But, while more is better, that doesn’t mean it’s necessary…

Food for Thought

In 2004, Canon’s flagship camera was the EOS 1D Mark II. That camera, near the top of the line of professional Canon dSLR, offered 8.2 megapixels. It’s successor, the EOS 1D Mark II also topped out at 8.2 megapixels, and the flagship line didn’t increase until the EOS-1D Mark III was introduced in 2007 with 10 megapixels.

Up until a few years ago, 8-10 megapixels was enough for professional photographers the world round. So, although today’s flagship camera offers 16 megapixels and the more recent 5D MK II offers 21 megapixels, these aren’t exactly necessary. It’s nice, but it’s something of a luxury, and often times it’s entirely unnecessary.

Does that mean you should turn away a high megapixel camera? No, not really… but you can find some few-years-old digital bodies in good used condition for a decent price. If there’s no other reason for you to choose the newer body, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars by buying a slightly less-than-modern camera that offers less-but-enough megapixels.

world at your own pace and to get exercise. There are so many types of biking routes and bikes that have been adapted to maneuver those routes that the task of buying the right back for you can be confusing. You can’t just see a bike that is shiny and new and say that it is for you. Pick the wrong bike and it will end up unused and taking up space in the garage or in your next yard sale. So, to get you started on your new exercise adventure here are five helpful tips for buying the right bike:

1. Determine where you will be riding your bike and how often.

How often you will ride and the route that you choose determines the best type of bicycle for you. Type selection is important and depends on where you intend to ride. Are you planning to ride on mountain trails or are you looking for simply speeding along the road or pavement? Your preference will actually determine whether you are looking for a road bike, mountain bike, beach cruiser or just a hybrid bike. Ask your friends or family members about bikes or you may just do some research on the internet so that you can develop some proper knowledge to help you find a bike that works for your needs.

2. Know your height.

Bikes come in different sizes to accommodate your height. A bike that is the wrong size for you can mean cramped legs, a sore back, sore knees or stretched muscles. To make sure you are buying the right size bike, straddle the bike. You want about an inch clearance above the frame. Checking the seat height is easy. While someone holds the bike frame steady, get on the bike. You want your leg about 90% extended or slightly bent. When your pedal is all the way up, you want your bent leg vertical so that your knee is over the ball of your foot. The seat can be adjusted forward or back to achieve this. To check if the bike fits your torso, your back should be at a 45- degree angle and your arms should be bent slightly. The handlebar stem can be changed out if you need it to be longer or shorter to get the right torso length.

3.  Visit a bike shop for advice.

Go to the experts when you want to know something. Those who sell bikes for a living know about bikes and will most likely share their personal views. Let them size you for a bike, ask their opinion about what type of bike you need and find out all the nuances of bike riding. Make sure that you are asking your customer representative about the features of the bike that you prefer. Learn about the frame, the seat, the brakes, the speed gears and more. Every type of bike will have a different set of features and try to find the model which will suit you the best. Ask about the availability of the accessories and parts. These things must be readily available so that you can buy them whenever you need them. Bike repairing can be a difficult task because of the complexity of the type of bike in question. Make sure that the bike shop offers repair services. If you don’t find a bike at that store that is the right bike for you, take the knowledge from that visit to choose a bike from another store or shop online. There a are some great online biking stores where you can often times find bikes that are not available locally.

 

4. Test ride a number of options.

Ask the store if you can take several different bikes for a spin. Some of the bike shops may allow trials while others may not. You could even ask a friend for their bike to “test drive” in advance. Don’t let the first bike you ride be the one you purchase from the store.

 

5. Buy the best bike you can the first time.

People have the tendency to stay on the cheap side especially during a recession, but there are some things that don’t pair well with “cheap.” A bike is one of those things. You will be riding this bike alone or maybe attaching a carrier for your child to ride with you. You want to know that you can depend on your bike to keep you safe while you ride. If the bike you need is out of your price range, then shop for a good quality used bike.

So what’s so great about the new iPad 3? Well, the good news is that it is not an update of older iPad models. It has its own distinctive features which most people are sure to look forward to. However, it’s not exactly groundbreaking either. Although there are many new features that a lot

of people are sure to welcome, most of these features are more or less comparable to other gadgets that have been entering the market in recent years.

iPad 3 Design

For starters, the new Apple iPad is very stylish, and it has a great Retina Display that is certainly better than previous iPad models. The design is not all that different from previous iPad models though. In fact, if you’re not familiar with certain subtle differences, you could easily mistake the iPad 3 with its predecessors. The only difference is that the iPad 3 is that, at least with regards to design, it’s around a millimeter thicker than previous iPad models.

In addition to its shape, it’s also worth pointing out that the new iPad 3 is a bit heavier than the iPad2. It weighs about 652g for the Wi-Fi version and 662g for the 4G version. Despite some people’s complaints about the added weight, there’s actually a good reason for it. The iPad 3 offers a larger battery capacity as well as better specs for higher pixels for the Retina Display.

Despite the added features though, the iPad 3 is not something that you can hold with one hand for extended amounts of time. Also, given its larger and its bulkier build means that you can’t fit it into your bag or in small compartments, although some people would say otherwise.

Hardware Features of the iPad 3

Now that we’ve spoken a bit about the iPad 3′s basic design, let’s move on to its basic hardware features. It features a dual-core A5X processor with four GPU cores for improved graphics. Also, the iOS 5.1 has been improved a little bit, and the same may be said about the apps as well as the games. These features benefit from the iPad 3′s improved resolution, which allows users to get better graphics for most of their games and applications.

Despite these advantages however, it’s worth pointing out also that the iPad 3 is not particularly revolutionary. What’s great about the iPad 3 is not how many breakthroughs it has introduced, but how it has changed and improved the features and designs of its predecessors. Most of its features can be said to be the natural evolution of the iPad series, and so they are not particularly groundbreaking. The good thing about these features is that they are not necessarily just upgraded versions of what you can find in the iPad 2. They have been improved to such an extent that they can be said to be something new, though not entirely divorced from their predecessors.

All in all, the features of the iPad 3 are what you might expect from Apple and the iPad series. So despite its flaws, the iPad 3 still garners a lot of attention and excitement from those who enjoyed what the iPad 2 had to offer. So there’s some truth to the assertion that the iPad 3 has a lot of great things about it.
